Presently India is the largest producer and consumer of sugar in the whole world. It is one of the major agro-based industries in India, and has been instrumental in resource mobilization, employment generation, income generation and creating social infrastructure in rural areas. About 53.38 % of these mills are in the cooperative, 36 % in the private and rest in the public sector respectively.
