Puis un récent voyage nous emmène à la découverte des trois lignes qui constituent le réseau principal exploité par la société Madarail : Tananarive – Tamatave, reliant la capitale au port principal, Moramanga – Lac Alaotra et Tananarive – Antsirabé, sur les hauts plateaux du centre où le rail dépasse 1600 mètres d’altitude. Le trafic marchandises, assuré par des locomotives diesel françaises et chinoises, est prépondérant, mais nous circulons aussi à bord de trains mixtes et d’une superbe Micheline, restaurée pour des excursions.Plus au sud, la ligne isolée Fianarantsoa – Côte Est joue un rôle de service public indispensable, en desservant une vaste région forestière privée d’autres moyens de communication. Un jour sur deux, un véritable marché s’installe dans les gares pour le passage du train mixte, qui offre un débouché aux produits locaux, ravitaille les villages, apporte les nouvelles du monde et permet de se rendre au chef-lieu. Ici aussi, une courte balade en Micheline permet d’expérimenter le confort des fauteuils en rotin et du roulement sur pneumatiques, comme dans les années 30 ! + + +We bring you a programme covering a somewhat out of the ordinary railway journey over the metre gauge lines of madagascar, the largest island in the Indian Ocean.A lengthy introductory section retraces the historical development of the Malgache railway system.
