Motif-Index of German Secular Narratives from the Beginning to 1400 / Index

Der Motif Index ist ein künftig unverzichtbares Referenzwerk für Erzählforscher, Mediävisten, Literaturwissenschaftler, Historiker, Volkskundler, Kunsthistoriker und Kulturwissenschaftler. Auf der Grundlage der Systematik des bahnbrechenden Motif Index of Folk Literature von Stith Thompson (1955ff.) katalogisiert und erschließt das durchgehend englischsprachige Werk alle wichtigen Erzählmotive der deutschsprachigen weltlichen Erzählliteratur vom 9. bis zum 14. Jahrhundert. Als Motive gelten alle bewusst geformten und herausgehobenen, strukturell relativ stabilen, handlungsrelevanten Erzählthemen (z. B. Situationen, Typen, Raum- u. Zeitkonzepte), deren inhaltliche Grundform schematisiert beschrieben werden kann. Das Vorkommen weit verbreiteter Erzählmuster wie z. B. "Sichtbarmachen von Feen durch magischen Ring", "Salamander widersteht dem Feuer", "Drachenkampf", "Kampfstärke durch Zaubergürtel" usw. wird im Motif Index of German Secular Narratives nicht nur für jedes einzelne Werk der mittelalterlichen Literatur lückenlos dokumentiert, sondern die einzelnen Motive werden durch ein durchdachtes Indizierungs- und Verweissystem werkübergreifend zugänglich und recherchierbar gemacht. Dadurch ist es u. a. möglich, rasch sämtliche Parallelbelege für ein Motiv in anderen Werken zu ermitteln oder die Entwicklung von Motiven bzw. Motivgruppen in literarischen Gattungen oder Zeitabschnitten des Mittelalters zu verfolgen. Die Bände 1 bis 5 bieten gattungsbezogene Motivkataloge geordnet nach Werken in alphabetischer Reihenfolge: 1. Matière de Bretagne 1, 2. Matière de Bretagne 2, 3. Höfischer Roman / Chanson de geste, 4. Heldenepik / Maere und Novellen, 5. Antikenroman. Zu jeder motivhistorisch relevanten Stelle werden eine konzise Inhaltsparaphrase sowie die zugehörigen Thompson-Klassifikationen geboten. Band 6 bietet drei wertvolle Indizes: 1. einen zentralen Motiv-Index in der Systematik von Thompson, der es ermöglicht, mit einem Blick sämtliche zugehörigen Textbelege zu ermitteln; 2. einen Index aller Stichwörter, die einer Motiv-Benennung angehören, z. B. "Fee" oder "Gürtel", mit entsprechenden Verweisen auf die Thompson-Klassifikation; 3. einen Index aller verzeichneten Namen, der z. B. die Ermittlung aller mit einem Namen verbundenen Motive ermöglicht. Die leistungsfähige, Band 6 beiliegende CD-ROM vervielfältigt die Recherchemöglichkeiten noch, so dass z. B. Anfragen wie "Finde alle Belege für das Motiv ‘Loss of wife/husband for breaking tabu‘!", "Finde alle Motive im Zusammenhang mit dem Namen ‘Gawan‘!" oder ‘Finde alle Drachenblut-Motive in der mittelalterlichen Heldenepik!" zuverlässig und in Sekundenschnelle beantwortet werden können. Damit liegt erstmals in der Fachgeschichte der germanistischen Mediävistik ein Referenzwerk vor, das das Motivinventar der deutschen Erzählliteratur des Mittelalters vollständig abbildet, nach international anerkannten Standards klassifiziert und der philologischen Forschung zur Verfügung stellt. Der Motif Index of German Secular Narratives from the Beginning to 1400 wird daher künftig zu den Standardinstrumenten der Mittelalter-Philologie gehören.,The Motif Index will be an indispensable reference work for narratologists, medievalists, literary historians, historians, ethnologists, art historians and cultural historians. Using the systematicity of the epoch-making Motif Index of Folk Literature by Stith Thompson (1955ff.), this new motif index, will catalogue and access all the important narrative motifs in secular narrative literature written in German from the 9th to 14th centuries. Motifs are seen as all consciously formed and displayed narrative topics which are structurally relatively stable and relevant to the action (e.g., situations, types, spatial and temporal concepts) and whose basic formal content can be described schematically. The Motif Index of German Secular Narratives will not only provide a complete catalogue of all the occurrences in each individual work of medieval literature of widespread narrative patterns such as "Fairies becoming visible through a magic ring," "Salamander resists fire," "Fight with the dragon," "Strength in battle through a magic belt," but will also provide a sophisticated system of indexing and referencing to make it possible to access and research the individual motifs across different works. Thus it will, for example, be possible to swiftly locate all the parallel occurrences of a particular motif in other works or to track the development of motifs or groups of motifs in particular literary genres or periods in medieval literature. Volumes 1 to 5 present genre-based catalogues of motifs arranged by work in alphabetical order: 1. Matière de Bretagne, 2. Heroic epic, 3. Chanson de geste, 4. Antique romance, 5. Courtly romance. For each passage relevant to the history of a motif a concise paraphrase of the content will be given, together with the relevant Thompson classification. Volume 6 provides three valuable indexes: 1. a central index of motifs using Thompson‘s classification system, which will make it possible to identify all relevant textual occurrences at a glance, 2. an index of all key-words belonging to the naming of a particular motif - e.g. "Fairy" or "Belt", with corresponding references to the Thompson classification, and 3. an index of all names quoted, which will thus make it possible, for example, to locate all the motifs connected with a particular name. Volume 6 is accompanied by a CD-ROM which will enhance the search potential, so that search commands such as ‘Find all occurrences of the motif "Loss of wife/husband for breaking taboo"‘ or ‘Find all motifs linked with the name "Gawain"‘ or ‘Find all dragon‘s blood motifs in medieval heroic epics‘ can be reliably executed in seconds. With the new Motif Index, German medieval studies will for the first time receive a reference work which will reproduce the complete inventory of motifs in medieval narrative literature written in German organized according to international standards.
