This is Gibran‘s second book after *Music*, in which he defends the poor and oppressed against all tyrants, whoever they may be. He expresses his resentment towards a corrupt and unjust civil society, and, as is his custom, adopts a spiritual approach. The book is characterized by its narrative and poetic style. This collection of stories contains three tales: The first story: (Ashes of the Mountains and the Eternal Fire) It speaks of the idea of ​​reincarnation and the gods of love. Simply put, it is a timeless love story, exploring the concepts of the unity of existence, the immortality of the soul, and its transmigration from one body to another. It tells the story of a young man whose beloved dies, and the gods grant them a chance at another life. The second story: (Martha the Albanian) It tells the story of an orphaned girl who falls prey to a wealthy knight and is pursued by an entire society. It recounts how she dies alone, ostracized, and impoverished, with only her only son and his friend attending her funeral. The Third Story: (John the Madman) One of the most profound stories, it speaks of the contradictions within Christianity between its teachings and reality, and of the rejection of anything unfamiliar, even if it seems right. It tells the story of a small town gripped by ignorance, where corrupt priests control the lives of the people, until John rebels after doing what is forbidden to the common folk: reading the Bible. He learns the true teachings of Christ and faces injustice, leading to his ostracism, imprisonment, and accusations of madness.
