Paradise in my Head

_Paradise in My Head_ argues that the problem of evil is the problem of freedom. God could have made a world without suffering by removing the knife, but that would also remove love, growth, art, and meaning. The knife is rational capacity. It peels fruit and draws blood. The cut is ours. The book rejects two easy answers. One: That God is absent or cruel. The Unmoved Mover initiates, then waits, because forcing goodness creates dolls, not people. He wants co-authors. Two: That abdication is virtue. From the monk to the king to the hermit, the book shows that setting down power when you have it is Cassian‘s opium. Silence at scale is a verdict. If you have the knife and refuse to cut toward bread, someone else picks it up to cut throats. The recurring images build the thesis. The knife. The field. The bread. The ledger. The paper boat. The lodestone. Each life adds a layer: the beggar learns necessity, the king learns weight, the judge learns context, the doctor learns limits, the merchant learns substance, the trader learns systems, the clerk learns repetition. Paradise is not a place you find. It is not a sky you enter. The thousand skies prove that every finished paradise is still. Ours is unfinished, and that is its worth. Paradise is a direction. A choice repeated. A field tended. A page turned. It is in the head first, as architecture, then in the hands, as work. The Angel is never named. She is not a miracle. She is a mirror. She shows Aurelius what he already holds. When she leaves, nothing external changes. But Aurelius does. And that is the only miracle the book allows. The final lesson is not comforting. It is burdening. If you have capacity, you have demand. If you have the knife, you must cut. If you have a ledger, it must point to grain. If you have a door, you must walk through it.
